INTRODUCE TOPIC

I use Anna O early in the course to show how Freud developed some of his distinctive ways of working and thinking. I describe Little Hans when students read selections from Totem and Taboo, showing how his understanding of Little Hans' displacement of oedipal affects onto horses parallels displacements onto the totem. I make passing reference to the Rat Man and Dora, but I haven't found time to discuss Freud's cases in much depth.

In the research class one of these is central (except Schreber for practical reasons). In the sexuality class, I don't mention them.

*****

I don't review these in class, but answer questions if students have encountered these elsewhere.

When students struggle with how odd the cases and people seem, I come up with modern-day versions of the people and issues to normalize and contextualize.  This generally helps.

I don't assign these to undergraduates, because the theory is archaic.  I have had psychiatry residents request them, and I will then assign one. Inevitably, I have to reinterpret it all using structural theory and obj-rels theory, which is tiring and somewhat confusing to the residents.

Extensive notes and diagrams for teaching Freud's case of Dora are available.  Most of the diagrams are flow charts showing the energy flow, conflicts and  defense mechanisms in PowerPoint slides.
